THORPE IN BLOOM
Thorpe in Bloom is the organisation that looks after the public planting in Thorpe Salvin. Everyone involved is a volunteer, and typically, helps look after the area near to where they live. For maintenance of those areas common to the village, working parties meet every now and again, to keep everything tidy. Our numbers are few, and we always welcome a new pair of hands, as none of us is getting any younger!
We plant a number of areas with bedding plants for colour, namely Coronation Garden; Pump Corner; the bottom of Common Road and the planters alongside Sorby Field. We also plant up a number of oak barrels around the village, and hope that the people benefitting from these planters will keep them weeded and watered.
Thorpe in Bloom is funded by the annual Garden Trail, and the occasional private donation. The Garden Trail takes place annually, at the end of July, when a number of willing volunteers open their gardens to the public. We usually have over 500 visitors to Thorpe Salvin for the Garden Trail, and over previous years, as well as funding the public planting, the event has raised many thousands of pounds for charity.
Last year, for the first time, we incorporated a scarecrow competition into the Garden Trail, and were delighted that over twenty villagers created amazing scarecrows, all of which received many compliments from the visitors.
Our committee meetings are informal and open to all, as we welcome new ideas and new faces.
