Welcome to the Brinsworth Parish Council Website

Brinsworth Parish Council has been in existence since 1895.  It comprises eleven local people (Parish Councillors) who undertake their duties on a voluntary basis and they are supported by a Parish Office.  There are three meetings per month (except August) and they are held on a Thursday in the Committee Room at the Community Hall on Brinsworth Lane.

The Parish Council is an essential part of the structure of the local democracy and has a vital role to play in acting on behalf of the Brinsworth Community.   It provides some services and owns and manages a number of facilities.  In order to carry out its functions the Parish Council employs several staff:-

  • Clerk and Assistant Clerk who are responsible for finances, administration and supervision of day to day operations.
  • Four Amenity Attendants who maintain the buildings, grounds, play areas and other facilities.
  • Caretaker and Relief Caretaker who look after the Community Hall.
  • Four Youth Workers who operate the KidZone sessions.

The Parish Council raises an annual precept (an additional amount of money accounted for through the Council Tax system) which, together with the income received from hiring the facilities, at least covers the total expenditure.  Any surpluses are reserved for future projects/improvements.

The Council aims to represent the views of all residents within the parish.  It has the ability to negotiate with and the power to influence other organisations that may key decisions (such as Rotherham MBC, Police, Health Authority, Highways Agency etc).

The Parish Council works hard to bring about improvements through local projects, lobbying other service providers and working in partnership with other parishes and agencies.  It is notified of all planning and licensing applications within the parish boundary and can make its views known.  Quite often these are taken into account, although he final decision on such application's remain with Rotherham MBC.

The Government sees a major role for Parish and Town Councils in reviving democracy, and modernising communities by putting more power into the hands of local people.  It is looking at ways of devolving more powers to parishes from central and local government.
