The first recorded mention of Wickersley Wood is in a document dating to 1600, stating it was coppiced and belonged to the 7th Earl of Shrewsbury. To restore its ancient woodland character a major project has been carried out over the last 5 years to 2006. It is one of 35 'Heritage Woodlands' in the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership area, which has been restored as part of the "Fuelling a Revolution" initiative, mostly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Forestry Commission. In 2003 the wood was also given the stamp of approval by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in recognition of its eco-friendly management, and was the first Parish Council in Engand to receive the certiication. |
Wickersley Wood won an award for the best woodland in Yorkshire in 2005 and Wickersley Parish Council won the prestigious John Boddy Rose Bowl, awarded by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and adjudicated by the Forestry Commission and the Royal Forestry Society. Members of the parish council and Woodlands Officers from Rotherham Borough Council, who help manage the wood, were presented with their award at the Great Yorkshire Show, Harrogate, on Thursday 14 July 2005. Wickersley claimed top prize in a competition to mark the Active Woods campaign, a national health-push led by the Forestry Commission and backed by the British Heart Foundation.
