LATEST ON BUS SERVICES

There was an excellent turnout at Thursday's bus meeting at Harthill Village Hall with around 150 attending from Thorpe Salvin, Harthill and Woodall. SYPTE and the bus companies were clearly not expecting such a large number of people and it was rather disorganised. But with the volume of people and the strength of feeling shown we think that a loud message was sent. The loss of bus services is NOT a done deal and is worth continuing to fight for.

Questionnaires to complete for the ongoing Rotherham Bus Partnership consultation can now be obtained from The Parish Oven, Tanimara, Harthill Post Office and Harthill Butchers. Alternatively, people can comment online using the link below. Please name the service you are commenting on e.g. X14, 27 or 271.

After last Thursday's meeting it is important to get as many of these questionnaires in as possible as this is the main evidence being gathered by Rotherham Bus Partnership. If you are affected in any way (or might be), please fill one in and return it to them. Postage is free.

FRACKING IN ROTHERHAM

The Parish Council recently received the information below from RMBC. There is no suggestion as yet that there are any potential sites in our area but as new licences are likely to be approved within the next year we will keep the situation under review.

Dear Colleague,

Fracking, as you are clearly aware, has received a lot of publicity in recent weeks and it is recognised that there are many who fear that this activity has the potential to harm the environment and disrupt local communities. In relation to the licenses which have been issued by the Government Department of Energy and Climate Change and cover part of our Borough, South Yorkshire Mining Advisory Service (SYAS) have provided us with information stating that licenses shown on the attached plan are not new and were issued in the last round of licensing in 2008 (they relate in the main to mines gas from closed collieries). However they understand that a further round of licensing is to take place next year.

The Government currently is working to produce information to reassure local communities that fracking will not take place unless it is environmentally safe to do so. The Department of Energy and Climate Change have produced information to respond to queries and provide further information on their web site

and a new Government Office of Unconventional Gas and Oil has been created – part of their role is to assist Local Authorities and communities understand this new technology.

The Government have stated on their DECC web site that they have no information regarding the intentions of the licensees.

From a Planning stand point we are currently assessing the new guidance but may have to rely on SYMAS or specialist consultants to assess any applications due to the specific environmental considerations within them should they come forward in the future. Planning permission would be required for each of the phasing including any exploratory work but would relate to the use of land rather than the processes involved.

As further information becomes available we will share this with you.

Regards

Karl Battersby
Strategic Director
Environment and Development Services
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

PLAYTIME IN THORPE

Two new pieces of play equipment – a cantilever type basket swing and a Quest climbing frame – have now been installed at the Sorby Field play area. The new equipment, and safety surfacing, was purchased with a Parish Council contribution of £10,000 and a National Lottery Awards for All grant of £9,546.

Upgrading the play area has been a long term aim of the Parish Council but only became a realistic possibility thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Sorby Field Play group. The group surveyed the parents and children of the Parish, chose the new equipment and produced the information and evidence that led to the successful bid for funding. Many thanks to all in the group for their help in finally making this happen. Thanks also to Stewart Kenny from RMBC for his expert advice and support and of course to Awards for All for providing the funding.

The new playground is proving very popular with children so far. Our next task is to refurbish the older pieces of equipment at the playground and this will start soon. One or two people have mentioned that the new equipment alongside the old is not particularly aesthetically pleasing but most people seem to like it and we are confident that it will become just a normal part of the landscape in time.

A family picnic to celebrate the new play equipment is being organised on Sunday 28th July. Details are on the back page.

TURBINE PROPOSALS BLOW UP A STORM

The Parish Council are opposing plans by Livos Energy for another wind turbine near Thorpe Salvin village.  Livos (a London based company) initially proposed to erect a German made turbine at Slaypit Lane, some 600 metres from the centre of our lovely village.  The Parish Council strenuously objected to this first submission. Now a second proposal has been made, this time to erect a turbine at Honeysyke Farm (west of the piggery).

The turbine would be taller than the Loscar turbines (98m tall compared to the 95m Loscar turbines). Both sites are much closer to Thorpe Salvin than the turbines at Loscar. Livos have not yet decided which site they prefer but they will apply for planning permission soon.

The Parish Council has engaged Bob Bryan, an experienced planning consultant, to help oppose these proposals. Bob has produced a comprehensive report, detailing how our environment would be damaged by building a further industrial turbine in an area of high landscape value close to a conservation area. There is also a report summary.

Thorpe Salvin and its surrounding area is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, and there are many people living in the village who object to these proposals. If you would like to make your views known, or help the Parish Council in its objections to these proposals, please contact any member of the Parish Council, or come to next Parish Council meeting on Monday 12th August at 7pm in St Peters' church.

NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT

Work on installing the two new pieces of equipment on the Sorby Field Play Area is underway. It should be finished by now but they are having a couple of problems with the thick bed of limestone that lies just below the surface of the field. It will be completed sometime this week. FURTHER WIND TURBINE PROPOSAL

Following the proposal to site a wind turbine on Slaypit Lane (which has been well documented previously), there is now a further proposal to site a wind turbine at Honeysyke Farm which is also in Thorpe Salvin Parish. The second proposal can be viewed HERE and is from the same company, Livos Energy Ltd. Neither proposal is a formal planning application as yet but the company have made it clear that they will proceed with a formal planning application at one of the sites. "Community engagement" by the company has been promised but has not materialised so far.

Comments on the new proposal are welcomed. The issue will be discussed at the next Parish Council meeting, Monday 8th July, 7pm at St. Peter's Church.

WIND TURBINE PROPOSAL

Following publication of the report on the proposed wind turbine there has been a fair amount of local media interest.

The Dinnington Guardian, ran a small piece about opposition to the turbine proposal. The same article appeared in the Worksop Guardian. Each was accompanied by photographs of the turbines at Loscar.

The Star, (City Edition), had a larger article on the same theme with a similar photograph..

The Rotherham Advertiser, carried a large piece about opposition to the proposed turbine and the report by "The Peak District National Park's former head of planning, Robert Bryan."

NO GARDEN TRAIL IN 2013

At the Thorpe in Bloom Committee Meeting recently it was decided that a garden trail could not be organised this year as no-one had come forward to co-ordinate the event.

Thorpe in Bloom plan to have a Garden Trail in 2014 and it is hoped to hold several fund-raising events this year to support St Peter’s church and other local good causes.

One idea is to open our gardens to Thorpe residents, friends and family, on an Open Day – possibly combined with another fund-raising event. This would avoid car-parking problems.

No date is yet fixed, and this will, of course be critical. In the first instance please contact Bridget Dixon if you would like to express an interest. There is no commitment at this stage. Bridget’s number is 01909: 770367 or e-mail bridget.jackson@ dsl.pipex.com

WIND TURBINE

There is no further news on the Slaypit turbine proposal. The Council has been in touch with RMBC planning recently to confirm this. There is also no sign yet of the “community engagement” exercise that Livos plan to undertake. David Temple at RMBC also confirmed that there is no timetable for a formal planning application to appear – it could be next month, next year or even not at all.

We hope to know more about the formation of a local action group after the next Parish Council meeting

A resident has provided a useful and interesting link to a planning refusal in Matlock which outlines clear grounds for refusal.

ROAD MAINTENANCE IN THORPE SALVIN

Further details of proposed roadworks as advertised in Thorpe Matters

Text of recent letter from RMBC Streetpride: -

Environment & Development Services
Riverside House| Main Street| Rotherham| S60 1AE
Switchboard: 01709 382121
www.rotherham.gov.uk

Dear Sir / Madam,

Carriageway Resurfacing Thorpe Salvin

I am writing to let you know about forthcoming road works in Thorpe Salvin. The works involve carriageway resurfacing in the following locations:

Common Road – from Worksop Road to outside number 18;
Harthill Road – from Worksop Road to the western edge of the village;
St Peter’s Road – throughout;
Worksop Road – from outside number 25 to outside number 51.

To complete these works safely, in accordance with appropriate codes of practice, and to help to minimise the inconvenience to the community, it is proposed that works will be undertaken as follows:

In order to allow normal access to/from the village for motorists and the local bus service during the morning and evening peak periods, works will take place between the hours of 0930 and 1530 only;

Unfortunately, the roads being resurfaced are too narrow to allow traffic to pass whilst works are taking place and therefore road closures will be required. In order to retain as much access to/from the village as possible the works will be undertaken in two phases:

Phase 1 - Worksop Road and Common Road will be closed whilst resurfacing works take place. At this time access to the village will still be available from Kiveton Park & Harthill via Ladyfield Road and Harthill Road respectively. Unfortunately, the narrow single lane nature of Common Road makes it unsuitable to safely cater for traffic displaced by the closure of Worksop Road and therefore access to the village from Worksop will be limited during this phase. A signed diversion will direct motorists wishing to access the village from Worksop to use the A57 to Anston, Dog Kennels Lane to Kiveton Park and Ladyfield Road to Thorpe Salvin. All roads will be open as normal outside the above working hours.

Phase 2 - Harthill Road and St Peter’s Road will be closed whilst resurfacing works take place. In addition, at times when work is being undertaken on that part of Harthill Road at its junction with Ladyfield Road, Ladyfield Road will also need to be closed. (Subject to there being no unexpected delays this additional closure of Ladyfield Road should be limited to 1 day). Throughout this phase access to the village will still be available from Worksop via Worksop Road (and via Ladyfield Road from Kiveton Park when works are not taking place at the Harthill Road / Ladyfield Road junction). A signed diversion will direct motorists who wish to access the village from Harthill / Kiveton Park to use the A57 to Worksop and enter the village along Worksop Road. All roads will be open as normal outside the above working hours.

It is anticipated that the works will take place in late February or March 2013 and will take approximately 10 days to complete. Two weeks prior to the commencement of works, signs will be placed on the approach roads to the village warning drivers of the times & dates of the proposed road closures.

Rotherham Streetpride is making every effort to ensure that disruption to the community is kept to the minimum during these essential road works, and will take steps to review the method of working and the associated traffic management should an unacceptable level of disruption be caused to the community.

I would be pleased to receive any comments you may have in respect of the above at your earliest convenience.

WIND TURBINE PROPOSAL - SLAYPIT LANE, THORPE SALVIN

A proposal has been sent to Rotherham MBC Planning Department to site one wind turbine up to 99.5 metres tall on Slaypit Lane. This turbine would be about 650m from the centre of Thorpe Salvin. The three turbines at Loscar Farm are 95m tall and are more than twice as far from the centre of the village.

The proposal is termed a "Request for a screening opinion" and it may precede the submission of a formal planning application. This document can be viewed HERE.

This will be discussed at the next meeting of the Parish Council (7.00pm, Monday 11 February in St Peter's Church).

DOG FOULING

An increasingly common scene in Thorpe Salvin these days

There have been several reports of dog fouling in the Parish recently, particularly on Worksop Road, Common Road and Sorby Field. All of these have been reported to Streetpride and we have requested additional signage and an extra dog waste bin.

HOWEVER, it is not the Parish Council's or RMBC's job to clear up dog mess. It is ENTIRELY the responsibility of the dog owner. So, if your dog is providing the inspiration for the photo above, please stop it immediately. If not, then one day you might be seen, reported, fined £200 and get your name in the paper. We will always prosecute cases such as this.

The Parish Council, and we are sure (almost) everyone in the Parish, would like to stamp this out once and for all. So if you witness this dreadful anti-social behaviour taking place then please report it - either to Streetpride (01709 336003) or to a Parish Councillor or the Clerk

FRIENDS OF SORBY FIELD PLAY AREA

Unfortunately, the group was unsuccessful with it's funding application to Veolia Environmental Trust.

However, we still have a couple of irons in the fire and we are confident of success with forthcoming applications to Awards For All and The Coalfields Regeneration Trust. Should these applications be successful we could still see the new equipment installed at the playground by April next year.

Many thanks to the Parish Council who are continuing to support the project.

ANYONE UP FOR A LAF?

Are you passionate about the great outdoors? Can you lend your experience about enjoying the countryside and ways to improve access to it to a range of decision-makers in local and national Government?

The Rotherham Local Access Forum (LAF) exists to advise on public access to land for the purposes of open-air recreation and enjoyment. The Rotherham LAF consists of people interested in walking, cycling, horse-riding, disability issues and the management of the countryside.

The LAF meets every 3 months or so and discusses ways to improve public access to land. It seeks to influence local authorities and national bodies such as National England, government departments and English Heritage by giving independent, constructive and informed advice.

Over the last few years, the LAF has achieved a number of significant improvements in the borough. For example, the LAF has worked with developers to provide a network of paths and tracks in major reclamation sites such as at Orgreave, Kiveton and Dinnington. The LAF has helped Rotherham MBC to successfully win funding for extensions to strategic trails in the borough. The LAF has also helped improvement work in various parishes and districts by creating and publicising doorstep walks and by providing better surfaces for public rights of way and ensuring that they are maintained in good order.

Could you help the LAF be even better? If you would like to know more and how you could apply to join us, please contact either Chris Hayes, on 01709 823800 or Ken Whetter on 0114 247 8179.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

The winding up of Harthill with Woodall NHW was announced in the last edition of the Parish Magazine. It was originally hoped that Thorpe Salvin would join forces with Harthill with Woodall to form a more robust area scheme. This is not now going to happen.

Interest in a Thorpe Salvin stand alone Neighbourhood Watch appears to be very limited so it is unlikely that the Parish will be covered by any NHW scheme at all

THORPE SALVIN GARDEN TRAIL 2012

by Lesley Hayes, Chair, Thorpe in Bloom

I suspect that running a garden trail is a bit like having a baby… you quickly forget the pain and worries once the ‘event’ is over and you are looking at your beautiful new born. Well, we didn’t have a baby to coo over, and some of us certainly were as tired as if we had given birth. But judging from the comments we received over the garden trail weekend, our efforts were well worth it.

We had nearly seven hundred visitors over the two days, and although the figures are not yet finalised, we have certainly raised a generous amount for our chosen charities of C-R-Y and St Peter’s church.

We had many kind comments from the visitors, who enjoyed the open gardens – and loved seeing one or two that hadn’t been open to the public before. But that is not to limit any praise from those who open year on year, and whose visitors love to comment on changes to these regular attractions– whether perceived or actual!

As with the last two years, the scarecrow competition was a huge success, and congratulations to Alexandra and Isobel who won this year’s competition with Hello Kitty, with Jonathan and Gail in second place, and Richard coming a very close third. It was great that all the entrants received votes and the competition was a very close run thing.

We had a new attraction this year in a display of classic cars. Personally, I wouldn’t know a carburetter if I were to fall over one, but the visitors who spent many happy hours leaning into engine compartments certainly enjoyed the beauty of the exhibits.

As ever, there were so many helpers and volunteers before and during the weekend that if I were to name people individually, I would surely miss someone out… so from myself and the committee, a huge thank you to all our supporters.

And finally… weren’t we lucky with the weather!

COMMUNITY LED PLAN

All of the surrounding Parishes have produced a Parish Plan (now known as a Community Led Plan) in recent years. We haven’t as yet in Thorpe Salvin but feel that the time is possibly right to do so. In a time of uncertainty and scarce public resources, we need to focus our activities well and ensure we are doing what is necessary, in the interests of the people of the Parish and at the best value.

Community Planning is about identifying issues and concerns, prioritising them and developing local solutions. It also encourages community participation and involvement. Further details will be in the next newsletter and on the website. In the meantime if you have any thoughts/ ideas contact the Parish Clerk or a Parish Councillor.

FRIENDS OF SORBY FIELD PLAY

Friends of Sorby Field Play is now a constituted group and plans to improve the play area on Sorby Field are moving forward, albeit a little slower than we first thought. We have held an extensive consultation in the Parish and quite a few ideas were proposed. In the end, for the first phase of the project, the group have opted to try and purchase a big cantilever type swing and a climbing frame, plus the necessary safety surfacing. The work was put out to tender (thanks to Stuart Kenny at RMBC!) and the winning company was Play and Leisure Ltd.

Now all we have to do is raise the rest of the money – we need £13,000 in addition to the £10,000 already very kindly committed by the Parish Council. Our funding bid to the Veolia Environmental Trust is being submitted in July, but we won’t find out the outcome until October.

We are already thinking of Phase 2 and the next meeting of the group is being held at 6pm on 12th July in The Parish Oven. Anyone interested is welcome to come along.

AWALF Funds

There is some money left over from the fund established to meet legal costs by the AWALF group a few years ago. There is a proposal that this money is now transferred over to the Friends of Sorby Field Play group in order to help with the general funding effort for the play area project. The sum of money involved is c£2,650. Of this £500 was an initial contribution from the Parish Council.

We are hoping that the transfer of funds can happen at the end of July. However, it is possible that some individual contributors to AWALF may not wish to have the money used for improvements to the playground. If this is the case then please get in touch with Mark Yellops before July 31st 2012 to register your objection. He can be contacted on 01909 515959.

THORPE IN BLOOM NEWS

You may have noticed that spring is finally upon us… the birds are nesting, the dandelions are taking over and here we are... Thorpe in Bloom is starting its year.

There are a couple of dates for your diaries and some information that some people may not be aware of.

Firstly, the AGM of Thorpe in Bloom will be held in St Peter’s church, Thorpe Salvin on Thursday 24 May at 7.30pm. I can’t promise an exciting event, but we welcome all attendees, faces new and old and anyone with an opinion. In a nutshell, everyone is welcome.

The second dates for your diary are for this year’s Garden Trail. At the last committee meeting, in the dark days of winter, we agreed that to maximise attendance and not clash too much with school holidays, the Garden Trail will be held on Saturday and Sunday 21 and 22 July.  Again, we welcome all volunteers, as the income from this event is the only funding that Thorpe in Bloom receives, and it is this income that pays for the public planting in the village.

Once the AGM is out of the way, we hold committee meetings every few weeks, more frequently on the run up the Garden Trail, putting the world to rights over a glass of wine, and generally chatting about what maintenance is needed, what plants we need to purchase, and anything else anyone can think of. These meetings are totally informal, and again, everyone is welcome. You don’t have to be on the committee, just come and air your views.

If you weren’t aware, Thorpe in Bloom and the Garden Trail are two subtly different beasts. Thorpe in Bloom is the umbrella organisation that looks after the planting and horticultural maintenance of the village. Thorpe in Bloom doesn’t look after Sorby Field, although we have been known to prune the odd tree. The Garden Trail is the fundraising event that pays for the work of Thorpe in Bloom.

We are a small group of volunteers, and would welcome new faces with open arms – if you would like to be involved, please come along to the AGM or if that isn’t convenient, give me a call on 01909 771260. We would love to hear from you.

Lesley Hayes
Chair, Thorpe in Bloom

SORBY FIELD PLAY AREA

Plans to improve the play area on Sorby Field have moved forward over the winter. Many ideas have been put proposed – a big swing, a climbing frame, basketball nets, mini-skate park – and all have been considered. A very well attended meeting was held in the Parish Oven in February to discuss plans and how to make them happen. Following on from the meeting a Friends of Sorby Field Play (this is very much a working title!!) is being formed and this will hugely increase the prospects of raising much needed financial support from funding providers. The Parish Council is committed to adding £10k into the pot.

A further meeting is planned for WEDNESDAY 14th MARCH AT 6pm IN THE PARISH OVEN. We hope to have full details of costings and suppliers by then and move on to the next stage of writing funding applications. The meeting is open to anyone interested. If you have any queries please contact Joanne Simpson on 01909 774750 or the Clerk.

QUEEN'S JUBILEE

To mark 60 years of the Queen’s reign the Diamond Jubilee will take place in 2012. The celebrations will be held over an extended weekend on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th June.

The Parish Council is keen to mark the event in some way and has sought ideas from residents on the best way to celebrate the occasion. The only idea put forward so far is to have a flagpole erected at Coronation Gardens, on which flags can be raised on appropriate days throughout the year. It is believed that a flagpole has been situated here in the dim and distant past. We are keen to seek residents’ opinions on the idea, for or against, before going ahead so please contact a Councillor of the Clerk if you have a view on this. There will not be a Parish Council sponsored event over the extended Jubilee weekend.

Representation was made to the Parish Council last year about seeking formal acknowledgment of West Thorpe as a postal address. It is currently officially known as Kiveton Park Station. Several residents made their support known for the change when we advertised the proposal in the last issue of Thorpe Matters.

The Parish Council has sought information on the process for seeking a name change with RMBC and the Post Office and is now in a position to make a formal case. As part of this we will endeavour to raise a petition amongst West Thorpe residents with a view to gaining 100% support. Work on the petition will commence in April.

Many thanks to those who have already phoned or e-mailed with your support for the change. The petition will require a bit of door knocking so please get in touch with the Clerk if you are willing to help out with this.

PRECEPT FOR 2012/13

The Parish Council precept for 2012/13 has been set at £8,325 - an increase of £200 or 2.4% - which is well below the current inflation rate. The precept had been frozen for the previous year. The Council had again hoped to avoid an increase this year but it is now responsible for expenditure previously carried by RMBC - in particular grass cutting on Sorby Field. The increase is well below the level  of the additional financial responsibility the Parish Council has taken on.

The Parish Council Budget for 2012 / 13 can be viewed HERE

BROADBAND

Digital Region is a groundbreaking project providing South Yorkshire with the best superfast broadband coverage in the UK.

Over the past two years Digital Region Ltd has built a 350 mile fibre optic network across much of South Yorkshire. It is very much hoped that this will be extended to cover Thorpe Salvin Parish during 2012-13.

Digital Region has asked the Parish Council for some help in undertaking initial research with local residents about current broadband usage and potential demand for an improved service. There are three questions: -

1) Do you use the Internet and do you currently have a broadband connection at home or at work?

2) Are you happy with your current broadband connection? What broadband speeds are you currently experiencing?

3) Would you be interested in getting an upgraded broadband connection allowing you access to greater broadband speeds?

This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the demand for such a service within the Parish and demand will be a crucial factor in any decisions taken. If you wish to respond, please send an e-mail addressing the questions above, to Scott Castle at Digital Region – scott.castle@digitalregion.co.uk. with the subject line THORPE SALVIN BROADBAND.

NEW MULTIPLEX CINEMA COMING SOON IN WORKSOP

The construction effort at Worksop’s brand new multiplex cinema has reached a major milestone today with the installation of custom-produced windows spanning the height of the building, breathing life into the cinema’s shell and marking the closing phase of its external development.

Each of the 65 window panes, which measure an impressive 1.6 metres by 3.2 metres, are the largest size capable of being manufactured within the United Kingdom and will provide a unique focal point for the cinema as well as an impressive backdrop for Worksop town centre.

James Collington, Managing Director for Savoy Cinemas, said: “We’re delighted to have reached this exciting and significant landmark in the construction process which illustrates both the efficiency and dedication of the team involved.

“We are committed to providing a fully-accessible, state-of-the-art multiplex cinema to serve the Bassetlaw community who, until now, might otherwise have had to travel outside the district to catch the latest blockbuster.”

The structural scaffolding that supports the multiplex shell will be stripped over the coming weeks and the highly advanced roofing technology, known as a composite clad system, which has the capability to expand and retract in line with acoustics will also be completed.

The multiplex is costing £3 million to build and once completed in March 2012 it will boast the very latest in digital 3D technology and Dolby 7.1 sound within six, fully air conditioned, auditoriums capable of housing more than 900 people

TELEPHONE BOX BOOK EXCHANGE

The telephone box was empied of its books recently. Whether it was theft or for some other reason we don't know. While the books had very little value it is still extremely disappointing if they've been stolen. It also puts on hold plans to add CDs and DVDs to the book exchange although books have been replaced.

If anyone can shed any light on what happened to them please contact a Parish Councillor or the Clerk

PLANNING

Text of recent objection to RB2011/1131 and RB2011/1400 Planning Applications at the Kiveton Park Industrial Estate

I am writing with the observations of Harthill with Woodall Parish Council and Thorpe Salvin Parish Council on these applications. Both Councils object to a change of use to allow waste transfer to take place at the site,

As background I should point out that the industrial estate to which these applications relate is subject to ongoing discussions between the Councils and RMBC over the condition of the site and regulation and health and safety issues. In addition, discussions are planned with the police and RMBC about road infrastructure issues in the immediate area. It is felt generally that should these applications be successful it will exacerbate an already unacceptable situation.

Specifically, the overriding concern of the Councils is the increase in heavy vehicular traffic which would be caused. Although both applications are generally lacking in detail, RB2011/1400 quotes annual processing of 50,000 tons of waste. Has any study or estimate been made on the impact this will have? The Parish Councils conservatively estimate an additional 2-3000 journeys to and from the site by heavy vehicles. In contrast, RB2011/1131 quotes processing of 1,000 tons in a very similar but very sketchy application. How have the figures of 50,000 tons and 1,000 tons been arrived at? Who, if anyone, will monitor how much waste is actually processed? It is also worth pointing out that one of the reasons cited for past planning applications being refused is an increase in traffic.

In addition, there were concerns that notices in respect of these applications were not displayed prominently, being tucked away on the industrial estate itself. These have now been moved onto Manor Road to facilitate public access to them.

The Councils are seeking a further meeting with RMBC in the near future to discuss the site and would wish to include discussion on these applications at that time. It is strongly hoped that no positive decision is made in respect of these applications until this meeting has taken place. This will also allow time for members of the public who may have only just become aware of the applications to make comments.

I am happy to discuss any of these issues but would appreciate some feedback on how RMBC intends to proceed.

Kind regards

WORKSOP ROAD SPEED SURVEY

Following complaints from members of the public about speeding on Worksop Road, the Parish Council requested that RMBC Highways department undertake a speed survey. This was carried out on Monday 22nd August 2011 outside the Parish Oven between 4:30pm and 5:30pm.

From the results of the survey, the 85th percentile speed of vehicles (the speed at which the majority of motorists travel at, or below) was 28mph towards Shireoaks and 27mph towards Harthill. During the survey the maximum speed recorded was 33mph.

The results of the survey are surprising given that we have all probably experienced speeding motorists through the village at some point. However it is unlikely that results at this level will lead to any additional measures being put in place.

If the problem persists we do want residents to keep reporting it. There is always the option of requesting another survey at a different time of day at some point in the future.

DIGITAL TV SWITCHOVER

Most people will know by now that the TV service in Yorkshire will be switching to digital in August, meaning that anyone without a satellite, cable, or Freeview system will risk losing their TV picture. For many, this is something they can sort out for themselves, or can get family or friends to help out. A worry though is that there will be some, perhaps isolated people who don’t have much contact with others and who might miss out.

Are you aware of someone in the Parish who doesn’t have much contact with others? If so, Peter Foyle of Rural Action Yorkshire is keen to talk to you. Peter is helping with the switchover and can give details of a scheme where eligible people can have the work done for them for a small charge, even for free if they are on certain benefits.

BOOK EXCHANGE AT THE TELEPHONE BOX

There is now a book exchange at the telephone box on Worksop Road. It started with a dozen books in May 2011 and a couple of months later there seem to be quite a lot more. Please feel free to go along and take a book. If you've read anything interesting and are finished with your copy, then why not take it along to the box and give someone else the chance to read it.

Its a bit rough and ready at the moment but some proper shelves will be added soon. We also hope to add a CD Exchange within the next few weeks. Its amazing what you can do with a very small space!
