WHAT DOES THE PARISH COUNCIL DO?
The Parish Council is a small local authority, with councillors being elected for four years at a time. The last election in this Parish was in May of this year. The Parish Council is subject to Duties (things that it must do) and Powers (things that it is allowed to do). The duties are mainly procedural and financial. Regular meetings must be held and a set of audited accounts must be provided at the end of each financial year. Parish Councils have the right to raise money by precept and this forms a small part of the local Council Tax. In Thorpe Salvin Parish during 2011/12 the precept raised was £8125, the same as the previous year.
The Parish Council is responsible for most of the maintenance on Sorby Field, apart from grass cutting, although it is likely that it will also have to take this on from April 2012 due to Rotherham Borough Council cuts. The Council also maintains the play area, monitors public rights of way and bridleways and provides and maintains public seating. The Council also gives grants to local organisations, supports local events and is the focal point for consultation on matters such as planning applications and Borough Council strategic planning.
Parish Councillors know the local area well and frequently represent the Parish at Borough Council meetings and events. The Council employs a Clerk, who works 5 hours per week and looks after the day to day business of the Council.
DURING 2011 (so far) ... the Council has: -
· Replaced the worn out noticeboards in Thorpe Salvin, West Thorpe and Netherthorpe.
· Refurbished the play equipment on Sorby field
· Refurbished the red telephone box on Worksop Road
· Started a book exchange at the telephone box
· Repaired a gate on Sorby Field
· Agreed a footpath refurbishment scheme with RMBC
· Commented on 6 planning applications
· Reported many items for repair to RMBC
· Consultation with RMBC on issues such as the former UNSCO site and road safety on Ladyfield Road
· Developed this website
· Produced its first newsletter
The Parish of Thorpe Salvin is very attractive and well kept but there is always something that needs to be done or could be done better. The Council would be very pleased to hear the views of local residents on what else is required. So ...
What does Thorpe Salvin need?
What does West Thorpe need?
