HARTHILL CARNIVAL - SATURDAY JULY 10th

COULD IT BE THE LAST ONE?

Here’s hoping for another fabulous Carnival on Saturday 10th July, and that the sun shines for us! Please show your support by attending. The theme this year is ‘Hawaii / The South Seas’ and we look forward to seeing the amazing parade with colourful floats and lots of happy faces! The regular appearance of the Dinnington Colliery Band will be all the more special after their recent TV fame!

There will be the usual stalls, refreshments and fairground rides and this year a surf machine - see if you can catch a wave!! Also there is the dog show - this year organised in association with Thornberry Animal Sanctuary. The main arena events along with the vintage tractors, shire horses and Punch and Judy all help to make this a popular day out for all the family!!

If you enjoy the Carnival and wish to see it continue please, please consider becoming a volunteer. We are desperately short of members. Key members have not been replaced and this is making it very difficult for the small amount of members left to organise future Carnivals. Harthill Carnival is one of the last remaining in the area, but without the valuable input from members of the community it will sadly follow the trend and be no more. Please do not let 2010 be the final Harthill Carnival - Harthill Carnival needs you!!

If you are interested in getting involved, we meet in the upstairs room of the Beehive at 8pm on the fourth Tuesday of every month except August and December. We would be very grateful for any help both leading up to and on the day of this year’s carnival.

HARTHILL MODERN JIVE

Harthill Modern Jive club has proved to be very popular since it formed last October and we now have around 30 members. Most members had never danced before and believed 'we have two left feet'! But it wasn't long before everyone was picking up the basic moves in the beginner's classes. The emphasis has been on 'FUN' dancing to uplifting music and everyone contributes to the friendly relaxed atmosphere. As well as a Modern Jive session the evenings have also included a Latin interlude which so far has introduced Rumba & Salsa moves. There are also plans to bring Cha-cha-cha, Samba & Tango into future series.

Harthill Modern Jive is now taking a summer break, but will re-open with a new series of sessions, starting on Wednesday 22nd September. We welcome beginners - no partner required - but couples welcome. We meet 8pm - 9.30pm in Harthill Village Hall.

Not sure what is meant by Modern Jive?

Well it's NOT rock 'n roll and neither is it ballroom jive. Modern Jive is more of a hybrid style - a fusion of rock and Latin influences, especially Salsa. It is sometimes referred to by other terms such as 'Ceroc' or 'French Jive'.

The tempo of Modern Jive is varied so some of its attraction is that it can be danced to tunes and pop songs from across the decades. Harthill Modern Jive uses tracks from the 50's & 60's right through to current chart music and so has appeal to all age groups. Modern Jive appeals to those who think they have 'two left feet'! This is because the emphasis is on hand holds, arm movements and position, rather than steps with the feet.

Modern Jive is partner dancing and the best way to learn is to regularly move on and practice moves with many different partners. In this way Modern Jive becomes very much a social event, where you meet and make friends very quickly. So whilst couples are very welcome, a partner is not essential because you are constantly moving-on in the teaching sessions. There are very few 'wallflowers' in Modern Jive!

So in short, Harthill Modern Jive is fun dancing for all, to a popular mix of uplifting music. It's quite easy to learn and is good exercise too! Why not give it a try?

Harthill and District Garden Association’s 65th Annual 2 Day Open Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show – Harthill Village Hall

As we are now in the middle of summer and hopefully enjoying our gardens, now is a brilliant time to be thinking of what you could enter in this year’s show.   We are aiming to make it even bigger and better than ever before and are encouraging as many people from the village to enter as possible

There are classes for Dahlias and Chrysanthemums, all manner of vegetables and pot plants and a section for cakes, jams and chutneys, knitting, crochet and embroidery.

This year we have a new look section for children in the hope that they will also be encouraged to enter in both growing and baking sections. This includes a sunflower growing competition for Harthill School children, and a display of what they have been doing in their vegetable garden.

The Show will take place as usual at Harthill Village Hall on Friday 17th September from 4pm and Saturday 18th and Sunday and 19th September 2010. Please put the date in your diary and plan to come and view or enter this great traditional show.

For lots of further information on opening and setting up times, how to enter and classes and exhibits, please visit our website   www.harthillfruitflowerandvegetableshow.org.uk
